What Do I Need to Become an Educator?

To become a Family Day Care educator, you need to complete the registration and membership process with a family day care service. During this process, you'll be assessed on:

  • Your ability to care for young children, both physically and emotionally
  • Creating a safe and welcoming environment for children to learn and grow
  • Showing enthusiasm and a genuine interest in children's wellbeing
  • Ability to work independently with support from the family day care service
  • Strong organisational and management skills
  • Effective communication with both children and adults
  • Understanding how children develop
  • Being sensitive to the needs and values of parents & children
  • Appreciating different cultures and family backgrounds
  • Willingness to keep learning and improving
  • Managing the finances of your small business

What Do I Need as a Registered Educator?

You’ll also need the following:

  • A National Police Clearance (for you and any adult members of your household)
  • A Working with Children Check (for you and any adult members of your household, if they volunteer)
  • A Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113) or an equivalent qualification (check ACECQA for approved qualifications)
  • A First Aid Certificate, plus Emergency Asthma and Anaphylaxis Training (HLTAID004 – this covers everything you need)
  • A satisfactory Home Safety Assessment
  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Enough toys, equipment, and resources for the children
